Kundalini

Philosophy

The history of yoga goes back 5000 years to India. Kundalini yoga is called the "Mother of All Yogas" because it is the original system to which present day systems owe their ancestry.

It is believed that there is a cosmic energy that lies within each of us. Kundalini yoga combines breathing exercises, mantras, and a series of postures that travel up through the practioner’s spine.

For our purposes, let’s equate the word "yoga" with balance. Balance is intrinsic to everything. Kundalini yoga will help you maintain your balance in life and compensate for all the stressful influences which constantly threaten to upset your equilibrium. Through this work, we want to participate fully in life from the perspective of our inner life. We want to build our awareness to encompass here and hereafter and dance across the tightrope of Time.

The absolute power of Kundalini yoga is purity, auspiciousness, chastity, self respect, pure love, detachment, concern for others and enlightened attention, to give infinite joy and peace to an individual.

Benefits

Kundalini yoga combines breathing, movement, meditation, stretching, relaxation, the science of sequence, and rhythm and sound to work on every aspect of your body, mind, and being. No previous experience in yoga or related disciplines is required for you to begin to achieve undeniable benefits almost immediately.

Kundalini yoga is not your typical routine of pretty poses. The discipline is an active one, with emphasis on results. Accordingly, it deals a body/mind/spirit plan for the new millenium.

As you practice Kundalini yoga over time, certain physiological prerequisites are met for total health and to facilitate your transformation. These include a balanced glandular system, strong nervous system, expanded lung capacity, and the erradication of emotional blocks that manifest as holding patterns in the musculature.

The process we promulgate is graceful and gradual. We're not looking for inner fireworks or "miracles." To those of us who've practiced and prospered through this work, the greatest miracle of all, in retrospect, was being given the opportunity to walk a path with heart such as this.

When you take this system to heart, your life becomes consecrated to the process of expansion and growth. Your most powerful aspect, once dormant as a seed, will blossom in the light and air of Awareness, your creative potential will be realized, and you will live in the glow of an experience no words can describe.

Consider making this practice an intrinsic part of your life. I can guarantee that in a very short time you'll be hard pressed to imagine how you ever got along without it!

Before Class

It's best not to have eaten two to three hours before practicing yoga.

When at all possible, do yoga in clean and accommodating environments.

Wear clothes you can comfortably move in (natural fibers are best).

It's best to do yoga barefoot.

Keep your spine and shoulders covered while doing any extended meditation.

Never practice yoga under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If you're taking medication under the supervision of a physician, consult her/him before proceeding.

Don't aggravate an existing injury. If you're creative, you can work around it and ultimately help the healing process.

Pregnant women should consult their physicians before taking classes. Generally, extra caution should be exercised after the fourth month.

When a woman is menstruating, she should substitute Long Deep Breathing for Breath of Fire and choose sets of moderate difficulty.

Try to set aside a time each day to do your practice.
